State of the Artist – September 2026

It’s September already!?

Dear Rewsletter,

As per last month, I released a total of 1 post, one illustration. That.. frankly was not nearly enough, but there is a reason behind it.

Other than my usual class and assignments, my graphic tablet’s drawing surface has been flaking.

(wowza)

It’s an XP-Pen Deco Pro Small that I own for over 3 years now, and it is my absolutely favourite piece of tech. Though, it has been in this rough shape for more than a year, and I was not fully comfortable using it since. The texture are rough, uneven, and even too frictionless on the patch which grows bigger every time I draw a stroke. By the way, I’m not disliking the product–In fact, I love my Deco Pro Small (XP Pen if you are reading this haiiii!!). After all, they are most likely caused by my own negligence. That’s why I ordered a protective plastic film to try and keep it in better shape. At the end of the day, I still want to draw.

I will let you know how the new experience is like next month.

Anyhow, the drawing pad is not the sole issue. I, allow me to be frank, forgot how to draw and what to draw.

Look, this may sound unimaginable, but I have been lost on finding what to draw and prominently: the dissatisfaction of my own lineart. I thought I was having one of the ‘bad days’, but days turns into week and weeks into month. I admit that I don’t like some part of what I drew, and, in the process of trying to perfect everything, I ruined my time to have fun and explore myself. I forgot how to admire something I made. Awful. That’s how I feel.

So I tried to relearn a reason to draw. First thing first, it’s for my own happiness.

Long story short, I read an essay argument that asked: What is art? And what does it serve?

Long story shorter, because it is almost midnight while I’m typing this: Art is to improve lives, and I think it shall serve kindness.

I will draw more. Expect some illustrations, maybe 2 or 3 ‘full’ ones, or experimental work. Stay tuned.

See you on the canvas!
